"We'll strike the Romans first and let that be God's sign to the people. He will bless our land with freedom."

Barabbas was a Zealot terrorist and murderer in the time of Jesus. He ran a faction of hardline Jews of who planned to strike against Rome. He planned to strike at the Romans in a terrorist attack and allow it to be a signal for the people to rise up against their oppressors. However, there were dissenters in his group, such as Judas Iscariot, who was swayed by the teachings of Jesus, thinking his words would be more likely to stir up a rebellion.

Barabbas' uprising failed and he was arrested. Seeing him behind bars encouraged Judas to sell out Jesus to the Pharisees. Later, Asher Ben Azra encouraged the crowd to demand Barabbas' release at Passover, purely to have Jesus sentenced to Crucifixion instead.
